The Telescreens

In 1984 the telescreens seem to be a big part of everyones lives. They are informed, monitored, and even entertained by these screens. Every morning the Party members are jerked out of their sleep by the screeching of the telescreen. Once they are awake they have to do excercises and are monitored by the instructor. This to me seems very strange and creepy. It is an invasion of privacy, especially knowing that they could be watching and listening to you all the time. There are some forms of entertainment on the telescreens. There are movies and music that the people surprisingly enjoy. The movies, as we discussed before, are crule, disturbing, and very different from what we are used to. To me the music just seems like something they use to fill in the gaps when they have nothing else playing. It is always military music, so maybe this is just another way of the Party trying to brainwash the people. There are also long messages of news and updates. They are mainly just statistics that are almost always false. I think they do this to make it seem like the Party is advancing. They compare current statistics with statistics from the past, which are also false. Winston knows in his mind that these facts are untrue, but there is no way to prove it. One thing I noticed was that the proles are not required to have a telescreen. This just shows how much the Party really doesn't care about the Proles or what they do. From class, I learned that this word comes from the word proletariat. When I looked it up, I learned that it means the class of industrial workers. They are also the lowest social class who don't have the skills to work with "normal" people, so they sell their labor for money. Throughout the book it showed that no one really cares about the proles, or their actions. If Proles don't have a telescreen, the Party can't monitor what they do. This is why Winston believes that all hope lies in the Proles. They can do whatever they want without being seen and there are so many of them. So you can see, the telescreen is very important to the Party's controllers to ensure that everything goes the way they want it to.

What I think is a more disturbing 'feature' of a telescreen is not the streams of information (that is most likely lies) constantly coming out of it but it also transmits what it sees and hears. There is absolutely no such thing as privacy for the people of Oceania. Not only are their thoughts being monitored by the Thought Police, but everything they do. The telescreens can be dimmed, but never shut of. You can turn your back to the telescreens and speak quietly, but there's still the risk of these actions seeming suspicious. (it brings new meaning to the question 'do you ever feel like you're being watched?') I think the streams of information is just a means of communicating to the people. It seems almost like a tv in a way, but the description of it doesn't quite seem like a tv. It also plays some sort of live fitness video, where all the people have to participate in before going to work. Winston even gets reprimanded by the woman that is dictating the exercises. Not only is the information coming out of the telescreens most likely lies, but it's also another way to push the Party's propaganda. Winston even mentions the phrase 'new happy life', which the woman announced with the 'glorious news of winning the battle for production' (pg. 58). That phrase was used several times, because the Ministry of Plenty has been pushing that on the people. It amazes me to no end that they don't realize that life isn't what the Party or Big Brother has promised.

In my opinion, the changes they are making in the dictionary are very unnecessary. I mean can you imagine someone saying, "Whoa, I did doublegood on my math test." It all seems strange to me and I don't see the big deal of leaving words in there that need to be used. In our language today, I would actually like to see more words added, not subtracted. Yeah, I agree some words are useless but having a variety of words to all mean the same thing make this world more open and free. You are allowed to use whatever word you want instead of being limited of choices. Being on the eleventh edition in their dictionary, only time will tell how long it takes before they all just don't even know what to say anymore because of all the words being cut. It seems unreal being able to forget all about a word and pretending like it never existed. By 2050, they said everyone would have no knowledge of the Oldspeak dictionary. I guess I never even thought of words being erased like that, vanished forever. It's not something I would enjoy, but the Party are just about the only people who have a say in what goes on in their society.

In 1984 they are not just chainging the language they are taking away from the language. I think they are taking as many words out of the language so that everyone will become more similar. So far in the book it seems to me as if the party is just trying to get everyone to be like a clone. They want no one to to have individual thoughts. Even now we do change the language somewhat frequently but its not to the same extent nor for the same reason. People are so different and free now I think it would take a long time for something like this to catch on. De-Complicate. (trademark Tyler Beichner and Associates)

It seems to me that newspeak is less a form of actual language, and more a form or control over the minds of people. It is even said that it will make thought crime impossible. This I feel is simply another way the "Big Brother" is keeping people from revolting. He is pretty smart, because if you take away words which require creativity and thinking, and replace them with simple ones, you can eliminate thought all together. However this is not a good thing for the people, because as humans one of our most special talents is our ability to be creative and express things we want to say with words which reflect how we are feeling. Big Brother wants to turn his people in to mindless machines programed to follow him blindly, and newspeak is just one of many ways he is doing so.

In a way, I agree with what the Ministry of Truth is doing to their Newspeak dictionary. They are in the process of taking out all of the "uneeded" words. For example, instead of using words such as "bad" or "great", they will say "ungood" and "plusgood". The whole concept of the idea is to simplify the whole dictionary and language, requiring less thought. This effect will lessen the chances of thought crime occuring. I think our own language should be mixed around the same way. I'm not saying take out simple words like "bad" and using "ungood". But if you already have a word to describe something, there is no need for more. Therefore words such as terrible, horrendous, etc... should be taken out of our language. So overall, I think the Minitruth's decision to de-complicate the language is a doubleplusgood idea.

In some ways the Ministry of Truth's Newspeak is similar to our dictionaries and language today, but there are also ways it differs. One way it would be alike, would be we have dictionaries also. We are also constantly editing ours and publishing newer ones with new or more recent words. Syme is currently working on the 11th edition. Their society also bases their language off of this dictionary, like we do ours. We learn new words by looking them up so we can later use them. One way it would be different, would be how they take words out. I'm not a hundred percent sure if we do that or not, but I definitely don't believe we do as often as they do. They find theirselves removing words that could be "harmful" or give too many people ideas to speak badly about the Big Brother. They change creative bigger words to insignificant boring words. I would not like the way they do this in their society. The "party" wants to stay in control and this is one way they can do this. Today, we have the freedom of speech and a wide variety of words. This makes us sound more intelligent and interesting, when we don't use simple words over and over again. I am pretty satisfied with our language today. Some rules are strange and spelling sometimes has tricks, but after growing up learning English, it isn't that bad. If we did change our language it would be hard to have millions of people all change.

According to Syme, the Ministry of Truth is trying to make the Newspeak language simple by creating new words and destroying old ones. It is an ongoing process that eliminates the need for more complicated and descriptive words. It does, though, make language simpler, but harder to express your thoughts. That's why I don't agree with the Newspeak. There is nothing wrong with Oldspeak and I don't understand why they are even changing it. I guess it's just one more way to control the population. In our language today I wouldn't change anything, but that's probably because I am so used to it. I would not change it in any fundamental way though.

In 1984, the Ministry of Truth is removing and adding words to the dictionary for the 11th edition. In the book it gives the example of removing the word "bad" and replacing it with "ungood" that way you are really only using one word. I, like most other people, disagree with this because it takes away from the art of our language. If we did this, poets would have a hard time writing poems and we would not have as many. Although these things for the most part would be bad, I do see why Big Brother chose to do this. I think it would make our language much easier and more efficient. We could more easily communicate and understand each other. Today, I don't believe much could be done to make our language better. If the government did decide to change it, I think it would cause more trouble than anything else. People would be angry and start to cause a lot of trouble. Even though George Orwell had a good point, I don't think anything will change in the future.

In 1984 there is a language called Newspeak. From examples of this in the book it seems for the most part they just combine words together to form new words. There is also a large process of the destruction of words. Winston's "friend" Syme is one of the people who works on the dictionary. He explained that there is no need for synonyms or antonyms. The example used in the book was good. If something is good, you simply use the word good. If it's better, you say plusgood, and if it's bad you say ungood. This would eliminate the need for excess words like outstanding, great, and keen. This may seem like a good thing and that it would make things simpler, however, it would be much harder to express emotion and intelligence. This would be good for Oceanea's purpose, but it is so destructive to the way we think and express ourselves. Sometimes we can make ourselves feel smarter and express our intelligence through the words we use. I disagree with Newspeak because it takes away our freedom of thought and knowlege. This is what Oceanea is aiming for. They have tried their hardest so far to take away peoples' freedom, and with the new dictionary I believe they could succeed in doing so. There may not be enough words to express their thoughts, therefore they could not hate Big Brother. In the book it says that orthodoxy is unconciousness. If you are not thinking, I suppose you could be considered unconcious. All of this is so hard to comprehend, because most humans have never thought of it and don't even know how to not think.This is why I think the destruction of words could be so dangerous. Words are a wonderful thing and should never be destroyed. We create new words all the time. It may be a word that will soon become know nationwide, or just some silly, meaningless word someone thought of one day. Words are so important and we would be nothing without them today.

In our society, we're always making changes to words. We modify them so that they're easier and quicker to say. The Ministry of Truth makes changes to their dictionaries as their vocabulary changes, as do we. Syme talks about getting rid of words all together. For example, he believes that someday they'll get rid of words that are basically stronger versions of "good", such as "excellent" and "splendid" because he believes those words are useless. He thinks they'll replace it with "plusgood" and "doubleplusgood" to still get the stronger meaning. In our society, we do stop using certain words, but we don't get rid of them all together. I believe our language could improve some how, but i'm not really certain of how. I don't have a problem with The Ministry of Truth making new words, but the fact that they are getting rid of words altogether shows just how much Big Brother has to control things.

The Ministry of Truth is removing words that they think could be rebellious thoughts against The Party. They remove words related to "bad" and make it into "ungood." However, I guess they can still say Big Brother is ungood but how can they defend or argue this statement if they can't find the words that don't exist. It's like if the words don't exist then they won't put them into action. They won't organize an uprising or tell one another they want to be free of Big Brother because they can't find the words. They are inventing new words, removing old ones, and giving them a new meaning. Soon Oldspeak will no longer exist and people will forget the words that link to what the past and truth really is. I disagree with these changes. I would hate to be limited to only a few words. I like to express myself. How can anyone do that when their words and thoughts are being limited? I think our language now should be more respected. We change meanings of words all the time whether its good or bad I don't know.

Words are being added and subtracted from our dictionary all the time. In the book 1984, it seems that they are only doing one of these; subtracting. They are trying to make everybody the same and take away singleness. They are on their eleventh edition of the dictionary, making it smaller and less unique each time. If they just subtract words, everything would sound blah. Syme says they are just going to use only a few words, adding prefixes and suffixes to them. I personally don't agree with these changes. Everything would be boring. I like using the color words to describe certain things, and i feel that so do many other people. It just shows that big brother and the party are trying to controll every aspect of life.

To start off, the definition of language is: the words, their pronunciation, and the methods of combining them used and understood by a community. Well, since that is the definition then isn't the language used in Oceania the same as the language we use. I mean, it is correct that their language is different but it is basically the same as our language. The definition states that "language" would be used and understood by a community. That then meaning that in a way our language and their language follows the definition of language. The only difference though, is that it seems that their use of language is more complex. In the book Syme is in charge of taking words away. We don't take words away(at least I don't believe we do). We just have words that have the same meanings but also have a bit of uniqueness with each individual word at the same time. For example, the word "mad". Mad has many other synonyms such as furious, enraged, indignant, or even ballistic. Then those words have many other synonyms and so on. If it weren't for being able to use other words, how would we be able to express ourselves the way we want to be expressed? Lets say I was really mad, and mad just didn't make the cut for explaining how mad I was. Well, then I could say that I was enraged or infuriated. Those words just make everything sound better and explained more. It seems that in our book, they want everything having to do with the language to be more simple. Personally, I don't think language should be simple. It should be difficult so we can learn new words that when said might make a conversation more interesting. Syme also speaks of the 11th edition of the Newspeak Dictionary. This to me shows me that they get rid of words fairly quickly and make up words fairly fast. My question to that is how? I know that I would just like to stick to the words in our dictionary rather than getting rid of them and making up completely different names. Some may say that, that would be lazy but I think that the people in Oceania are lazy. If they decide that they want to stick with saying things like, "ungood" instead of "bad" then that is lazy. They feel the need to rid of synonyms and antonyms. They believe that there isn't any reason to have a word just because it is the opposite of another word. In our society we feel that we need synonyms and antonyms. Without synonyms or antonyms, how would we even begin to think about spicing up a conversation or book? We just couldn't live like that. One part of the book Syme says, "Do you know that Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year?" I guess all I'm trying to say is why. Why would the government want them to "narrow the range of thought"? I guess I'm just going to have to continue reading to figure this story out.

To me, they change their language as much as we do. People are always changing words, adding new ones, not using old ones, and speaking differently according to the way everyone else speaks. In the story, Syme is in charge of taking away words. They are on their 11th edition of this Newspeak dictionary, and all they are doing is simplfying. This is pretty much the complete opposite of our society. I have never heard of anyone saying " I don't think this should be a word anymore." They don't just take words out of the dictionary. In a way, by removing all these words, they are continuing to take any uniqueness people have away. We can say we are happy, but we can also say that we are excited, joyful, exuberant, glad, all these words decribe the same thing, but in a more exciting and colorful way. The "Party" just continues to control everything even further by taking away certain words and dictating how someone has to speak.

These pages teach me alot about two major parts of the book. It tells me that winston has alot of guts. I fear those guts may get him into alot of trouble. Alot more of the setting, and geography of the land is described in these pages. It talks about many other places other than the tree we went over in class. Argentina comes up in one of his thoughts, and so does New York. That makes me think that the world is about the same as it is now, but the places names have changed. At the beginnings of these pages they are at the din. the food that Winston and Syme recieve reminds me of the food that the jews recieved at the concentration camps. It reminds me of this because as you know we are currently reading NIGHT. Winston recieves this slimy soup, bread, and a piece of chese. Oh yeah can't forget about that big'ol cup of high cuality Victory Gin. Aside from the chese and Gin the meal sounds the same. Winston is sort of friends with Syme, but then makes the remark that Syme would turn him in to the Thought Police even at the suspicion of him commiting a thought crime. At the din the young dark haired girl has his eye on Winston. After work instead of going to the town recreation center he walks through the prole part of town. There is no law against this but it is a little risky. While he is there a missile hits a building two hundred meters in front of him. It makes me wonder if any missiles ever hit on the side of town were members of the party live. while he is there he sees an old man in a pub. Winston goes in to buy him a drink and fiond out about some things when capitalists ruled the land. This to me is very risky because if the thought police would happen to arrive Winston I'm sure would be arrested. Winston somehow finds himself at the same shop that he bought the dairy from. It really suprised me that the store clerk recignised him. When Winston saw the room upstairs he thinks about renting it. I think people would know if he didn't show up at his own flat and he may be at least consulted about it. When he exits the shop the young dark haired girl is walking right toward him. Winston thinks she is spying so he avoids her, but then has thoughts of killing her. This doesn't suprise me because it's not even the first time he has thought about killing her. After I read all these pages it gave me the impression that Winston kind of wants to become a Prole. He feels that Proles have more freedom and I think that he really wants that freedom.

The Road Setting

In the book I am reading, life is very different than what we know. The way the author writes this book pieces of information are missing. From what I know right now, I would say the setting of this book is in the future. There is a father and son and they are on a journey south. It seems that there are not many people left on the planet but what happened I can't really say. There are still things like coca cola and some houses, but these are things that only the father knows the son is clueless to what these things are. I see this book as being set in the future because there are things from our present time but something had happened to the earth and this book is set after that.

1984:

I hate this book so far. I hate most politically themed books, I hate discussing politics and the government. It's obvious that England, Oceania, is a totalitarian state. It doesn't surprise me, because George Orwell (Eric Blair) was obviously obsessed with politics. Eric Blair himself wouldn't be the type of person I'd get along with; he was hypocritical (but who isn't?), seemingly full of hatred, and politically centered. Although I'm not partial to 1984 it's very creative. It makes the reader think, and at the time it was written (1949) it did show the fears of the world's population. It was written after WWI, WWII, a Spanish Civil War and economic turmoil, so this did seem entirely possible and real to the people at that time. Now to us this is just a story and doesn't seem as scary or possible. I don't think there's anyway today's society in England or the U.S. could become a sadistic utopian society like in the novel.

After reading the firsrt fifty pages of 1984, I noticed that people seemed to be interested in death. Not just any kind of death, but deaths where people are tortured, destroyed, or publicly executed. Public executions are a popular spectical for the Party members. One man actually said he likes it when their toung hangs out and their legs flop about. On the "telescreen" there are several different forms of entertainment. Some that have been talked about in the book include movies, music, and news. In Winston's diary he explains what happened in on of the movies. He said, "One very good one..." was about a boat somewhere in the Mediterranean sea full of refugees. He went on in detail, but one part that really stood out to me and seemed odd was a shot of a child's arm being blown into the air after a hellicopter had blown up the boat. Right before that happened a woman was holding a child. She was squeezing him and trying to protect him with her arms, and the child was snuggling into her. When they were blown up the audience cheered with excitement. After reading this, I wondered if they actually blew people up to make this scene, or if it was all fake. My guess is that they actually blew them up because so far it seems like no one cares about any other human being. Winston wrote that no one cares what the proles say, so maybe they are non-important to the Party, which makes me wonder if it was proles in the boat. I'm not sure, but so far the movies seem,what we would call them today, messed up. I am curious to see if there are any other movies like this that are described in the story, and how this movie will be important later on in the book.

I find it very hard to believe that in this book, an audience would actually cheer on the death of other people. If that happened in our society today, things wouldn't be normal. George Orwell has a way of making this 'different' than things we are used to that's for sure. He makes it clear that all the films are about war. If that was the case today, not many people would be wanting to even watch all the movies. It's not a fun topic: war. Not something many people discuss that turns out as an interesting conversation. It's most definitely wrong how they're encouraging kids to be just how they are, cheering on the fighting and deaths. It just doesn't seem right to me. This society needs a little work in my opinion.

When I first started reading this book, I knew it wasn't the type of reading I usually get into. Politics aren't something I like to read about or government issues. In the end, the first 50 pages were actually pretty decent once I got myself into it. George Orwell has a weird way of writing this book, but it makes it magnificent in so many ways. A lot of authors can't write in this style, making it sometimes hard for the reader to understand. He is probably intending to make us a think a little, which is probably pretty good so it broadens our horizon to where we're not reading lower level books anymore. I think I'll end up liking the whole story by the time we reach the end. The society in the story is not something I'd like the live through. He is using words like 'Party' and 'doublethink' which makes us wonder what it is he's talking about. The whole part about the two minute hate deal is really interesting to me, and doing that kind of thing in our world today is not something that would be allowed. Goldstein obviously had a lot of haters and that was one of the main reasons for having this Hate time. Overall, the book will have its ups and downs, but somehow I'll make it work.

I was really surprised when George Orwell started discribing the movie that Winston was writing about in his "forbiden diary." He discribes the movie as being gorey, and uncalled for. It is about a group of people being chased down and killed. Some of today's movies are like that, but we react differently. The people in the book are excited and are cheering on the fact that innocent people are getting killed, while when we watch these kinds of movies, we don't. It also seems like the kids in the books are expected to go watch the movie. Where in reality, kids under 18 are not allowed to watch without parental supervision. This is just kind of strange to me.

The first 50 pages or so we have to read are fun to read, but are not fun at the same time. I mean George Orwell created a pretty unique and creative world. It's interesting to learn about what he created, but like others have said, it takes a long time for him to get to the point. I feel like there are some things put in there that don't need to be. But then again, he is trying to describe something that he has pictured in his head, so we get the same image as him. I have to give Mr. Orwell credit for some really creative things too. The Two Minutes Hate is a pretty creative idea, that im pretty sure no one else has thought of. I like though how he has taken the modern technology of his time and gives it a new name, gives a little twist to is, and puts in his story. Then the wars and hatred, almost makes it feel like the second world war is still going on, even though they say it has stopped for some years now. Lastly, I think that there is a connection between the character Winston, and the famous Winston Churchill. I don't know how or why yet, but I think there may be.

When the book first mentioned flicks and the massacre of what seems like innocent people, I thought about the scary movies that a lot of us like to watch. The events that happen in the flick is similar to some horror films we watch. The exception, however, is that the people in Oceania seem to enjoy the film in a different way. They are excited and cheering when the mother in the ocean with her child gets blown up and the fat man is shot. This is a terrible thing and no one in their right mind would be happy and excited about the murder of humans. Their moral views have to be really distorted. It is possible that this may have been a live film and the child, mother and fat man may have been murdered by the helicopter. This makes me think that maybe the helicopter was from Oceania and this was a live film and the people murdered were from the hated Eurasia.

I thought it was interesting how there were no other choices of movies, but I guess that just goes to show how their society in London is. It is full of war and hatred. It is so terrible that in the one movie they shot an innocent man from a helicopter. They had no reason at all to be shooting this "fat man" in the water. Then they dropped a bomb on the boat with a mother and young child. Hurting young children like that is just disturbing. Why would they show parts of the man with holes, or the child's arm in the air. It is even more disturbing that the people watching this movie cheered when this happened. It is so disrespectful to laugh at something like this. Also, why would parents bring their young children to see such a violent movie? It just seems that their whole society is brought on violence being okay. This is the complete opposite of where we live, which is what makes this book so different.

I found this part of the book to be somewhat disturbing. Why people would want to see what is described in Winston's diary entry is beyond me. I think to laugh at someone who has holes through his body, and is in lots of pain is morally wrong. When it came to the woman who put her body over a little boy, I think that the woman was trying to give peace to the boys mind. The woman might of known that none of them were going to make it out of there alive, and maybe she did, either way she did the right thing to try and help them. Then the woman that jumped up and screamed out in the middle of the flick, I personally think, did the right thing. No children should be watching anything like that. It could put images in their head that should not be there. And any parent who who lets their child(ren) watch this is not in their right mind. This flick could influence anyone in a negative way, and never should have been watched, that is if it is as bad as it described in the diary enrty.

At first, this book was a little confusing, then I started to understand it. It seems like this “Party” is trying to be a utopia, but what they do and don’t keep from the people to be "safe" is making it a distopia. They have taken their freedom and the truth. There are “telescreens” in every room watching and listening to everything they do. Everyone lives in fear of what the “telescreen” might see or hear. They also take every record of a previous event written down and destroy it. That is Winston’s job, and I think this could be part of the reason why he hates Big Brother. Why would they destroy all records of things that happened in the past? They do this so people can’t prove what happened, so there is no certainty about their history. There’s no written proof that it happened, so people don’t know if it actually did, or if they’re imagining it. I think they do this because in those records there might be something that may be negative twords Oceana. There are so many more things that make this place seem so strange. In a lot of cases, parents are afraid of their children. They fear that they will overhear or even sense somthing that is unorthodoxy. Children take in what they see and want to please adults, especially thoes of higher power. Even their parents' love wouldn't stop them from turning them in to the Thought Police. People also enjoy seeing people hanged. Winston's friend said his favorite part was watcing their feet kick and fly around and their toung hanging out, bright blue. It seems like they are amused by violence and death, and this is very eccentric. Why do they love to see the violence? I think it's becayse they were raised to be that way and grew up with the motto "War is Peace". This is a very unique and disturbing place and I'm glad there is no such place for real, however, I think there are some events that can be related to it. Wars that have had a huge impact on us, like WWI and II and other unfortunate events. I like the story so far and I'm very anxious to see how it all unfolds.

As I was reading about this movie in his diary I was pretty alarmed. This society seems to want to have their children to enjoy seeing the government’s “Traitors” viciously and violently killed in very graphic descriptions of actual gore. In our society we have a big debate about violent movies and videogames, and we find it bad parenting if a parent would take a small child to a movie of this type. The society in the book seems to use this as a form of brainwashing and “programming” the children to be violent against anyone disloyal to big brother, so they can have an army of loyal mindless do as your told soldiers or "the spies" in every place of society.This is kind of what is happening in Libya with their crazed leader arming his citizens. I know it’s a very thin connection, but I still see one.

I found the "flicks" that Winston talked about to be very...interesting. In an odd way, they did resemble how our societies act today. Obviously we aren't forced to watch strictly war movies, but when we do our reactions to them resemble each other's. I have not seen anybody watch any war movie ever without rooting for one side or the other, no matter how obvious they choose to make it. The only difference I find in this novel is that when actions are shown that disagree with the movies, those people must be punished for what they have done. I find it very odd how controlling the government must be, even on issues that seem to have no relevance or importance at all, such as this one. From here on out, I am intrigued to finally figure out the reason as to why the government controls everything like they currently do.

The first thing that Winston decides to write down in his diary is about the "flicks." It's weird to me that all their films are about war. There's no comedy, chick flicks, or action films. I wouldn't enjoy watching war films all the time. But people in this book enjoy watching war films. They were amused by some innocent person being shot down by a helicopter. The people in the book reacted like most people seeing the movie would. This told me that the people in the book are normal, but they are in an unprecedented environment. I thought it was intriguing that all of the movies were war movies. I surmise Big Brother wanted them to be educated in war so they could be more advantageous in future battles. Big Brother is really in control with everything about the citizens' lives. This makes the "Big Brother is watching you" posters more appropriate. Personally, when I read about how the theater was in this book I was in total shock. People laughing during war movies, unbelieveable. I couldn't understand what was funny or how they could even find anything to be funny about war. One part I remember so clearly is when Winston speaks of the audience laughing about a fat man swimming and then being shot. I mean, really people? That is the last thing to be laughing about, what if that man had been you? This part in the book is probably when I started to first become confused about everything in this story. I understand that the story isn't meant to be about a perfect world, but this story is also far from reality. We don't live in a perfect world, but at least we know right from wrong. We have manners and respect which it seems they don't have. Death. That is no funny matter. I don't care if the world that this book is revolved around is controlled by the government, it's just not funny. Thinking about this part in the story makes me sick to my stomach. I guess I just don't understand. Without understanding this world these people live in though, I can't make assumptions and call them all bad people. When I first read the account of the movie Winston was watching, I couldn't believe the reaction of the audience. They were happy to see this and they were happy to watch innocent victims suffer. To me though, it isn't much different than the times we live in. People don't shout out at a movie theater and laugh at death, but they do pick a side and root for it. If someone is watching a war movie and they are from the United States, most root for the U.S. to win and hope for the downfall of the opposer. I know it's just a movie and it doesn't really matter what they do, but that is to me still the same as just being happy for death. Even in just action movies, people will pick a side and stick with it to the point of hopeing the "bad guys" die or get hurt. This is just the way people are and I think Winston's writings are just a little more dramatic version of how people today feel.

When Winston begins to write in his diary, he says he's writing out of panic and just rambles on about going to the "flicks". He said that they were all war films. The one he saw was about a ship full of refugees being bombed in the Mediterranean. He then went on to say how the audience was "amused" with shots of a big fat man trying to swim away from the helicopter that was after him. He also says the audience, especially children, found enjoyment when it showed a lifeboat full of children with a helicopter hovering it. When the helicopter finally dripped a bomb on the lifeboat, all the children's' arms rose in excitement followed by applause. That is such a terrible thing to find enjoyment in. To me, this shows that their society encourages war. They seem to be entertained by violence. I'm not say that some people now aren't entertained by violent movies, because there are some. But they're entertained by violence to an extent. I believe these people take it too far.

From the first few pages we read in class I knew I would love this book. My taste in books have always been the ones that in some peoples minds seem to over analyze the small things. In this story so far there have been many things said that make references to things that were a big scare when this book was published. This book also pulled me in with its sense of mystery and ambiguity. Simply the idea of things such as the Thought Police, Big Brother, Telescreens, and the four ministries make me want to read on. The message that Orwell was trying to send to the world with this book really doesn't really just appear, but you must think about it. As I was reading this first fifty or so pages I couldn't help but feel like this society reflects a very communist society, and may have been trying to send a message to the world about the dangers of communism. The scariest and most intriguing thing to me so far has been the concept of "doublethink" which makes perfect sense to me, and because I understand what it means, I am also frightened about how possible it is to occur. However the main reason I love this book so far is because it seems to engage parts of your mind, and keeps you thinking all the time you are reading this. I can defiantly say that this is my favorite thing we have done so far this year.

Honestly to read this book it takes all of my effort just to read to the next page. George Orwell writes about some pretty cool stuff but he takes forever to get his point across. I would rather he takes about half the time and just conveys his point to me quickly. The topics are interesting; I feel it'd be really weird to live in a society like this one where everything is controlled. It seems to me that the "Party" is trying to make the society a utopia, but the way they are going about it makes it a distopia. The weirdest part of it all to me is that everything that is written down from the past, every little detail, must be changed daily to reflect the current events going on in the present. One thing I'm really looking forward to is finding out what the biggest conflict in the book is and how the main character goes about resolving it.

P.S. I really like the comment by "mhurst" stating how we should have two minute hate time in school. This idea is brilliant and I hope someone with authority agrees with us and takes the further actions needed to allow this to happen.

I sort of understand what is going on in this book so far. The author doesn't really come right out to what he is trying to say but makes you search for its meaning. Everything about this book is different and weird. Everyone is controlled by this thing called "Big Brother." Winston is always being watched even at his home. He can't even think without the "Thought Police" listening in on him every day. What kind of life would that be where you have no privacy? The "Party" controls everything even the history and the language. They can change the past and make people believe in these lies. They wipe people off the face of the earth if the "Thought Police" catch you thinking bad thoughts against the "Party." Then children are encouraged to defy their parents and report them to the "Thought Police." What kind of place is this? I would hate to live in such a place like this. It makes me grateful for the freedoms we have here.

I must admit, when Rut first told us we had to read 50 pages, I wasn't looking forward to it at all. Especially after reading those first few pages in class. I was so confused until I continued to read this weekend. I think it is just a different style of a book, that I am not used to. That makes it harder for me to comprehend. He does not come right out and say anything, he makes you think. He also uses a lot of big words that I have no clue what they mean. There are so many that its not something you can just ignore and keep reading. I constantly found myself looking up words on my ipod to better understand what was going on, which definitely helped a lot. I found that the "thought police" was very strange. What does that even mean? I don't understand how someone could be vaporized because of something you thought. If it is your thought, then how would the "thought police" know what you were thinking? To me it just doesn't make much sense. Then, there is the whole idea of how the parents are afraid of their own children. Wouldn't that mean that the parents are doing something wrong in raising them? The few times the children are mentioned in the book, they seem young yet very out of control. Just thinking about what it'd be like to be sent to Big Brother and have your memory completely erased is scary. You'd feel completely like a different person afterword and not know whats going on. But, I guess if their children are out of control there is nothing more they could do. Also, I think being in Winston's position would be very hard, knowing about life before the Big Brother. If my job was to try and cover up people brainwashing children, I'm not so sure if I could do it. That would just be difficult for me. I thought it was weird how he doesn't know what the date or year is. If our society today didn't know what the date or year was, people would go crazy. Our world is definitely based on time, where I have to be at a certain time everyday. If we didn't have the time factor like Winston, our world would simply be in chaos. I am becoming more and more interested in this book, the more I read. I don't like to read, but I am sort of looking forward to reading more of this book. It is just so mysterious and different I want to keep reading.

I personally thought this book was stupid in the beginning, but I think that's because I didn't understand what was going on. As I kept ready it got more interesting and things are making sense. It has already kid of opened my eyes about how some what is happening in this book is somewhat happening in countries in the world. Oceania seems very scary. One thing that stuck out to me is that adults are often afraid of their children and the children have been brainwashed by the Big Brother. Winston's generation is the only ones that remember that there was a life before the Big Brother, even though Winston's job is to cover up everything they've done. I'm predicting that Winston will find the conspiricy group and help overthrow the Big Brother, but it will be very hard to do without the Though Police getting suspicious. When we started reading this book in class, I was so confused. I had absolutely no idea what was going on. Then Rut said we had to read 50 pages, and I was not looking forward to it at all. So when I got home Friday, I reread the four pages that we read in class then kept going. Once I started understanding things, it was really hard to put down. There are a lot of things that I would have never been able to come up with if I were the one writing this story. The Two Minutes Hate is funny to me, because its so dumb. They're screaming at a tv because of this Goldstein. Who exactly is Goldstein, and how does he broadcast the Two Minutes Hate? There are also a lot of things that kind of confuse me. What exactly would be classified as a "thought-crime"? and how would people know you're committing it if you're thinking it and you're the only one who know about it? That must mean people are just assuming these things. I think its interesting how theres a department of people employed to go back and change the past. For example, if this Big Brother character made a statement in a speech that later turned out to be false, these people could just go back and make it as if it never happened. It would be a great thing if we could do that because then we could always go back and change our mistakes. Although there is a lot I like about this book, there is definitely a lot of twisted things in it. Just think, we're only on the first 50 or so pages. That must mean there is a lot more in store for us, and I'm actually looking forward to it.

When I heard we were reading yet another novel, I was not very excited. Rut talked about it being about this horrible imperfect society and that just sounded depressing to me. Now after reading the beginning, I changed my mind! This society is so twisted! It seems as if they put so much focus on hate and violence and betrayal. They have this two-minute hate where they basically scream at the tv and at eachother and then go back to work. That is if we were to take two minutes a day to scream at Hitler talking on a screen. Nobody is really fond of him, but it is just pointless to do that. It's just a waste of time. Also this whole thought police idea. I can't even imagine not being able to think what you want about things. This would give you no freedom for anything. How can you possibly be your own person if you are "vaporized" for even thinking something wrong. Everybody at one point has probably thought about something they know if wrong, but it doesn't mean they should be punished or killed for it. Everyone has their own free will and they can choose to act on these thinkings or they could choose the right course. This book doesn't give this society freedom of anything. I am really looking forward to continuing my reading in it.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't very excited about reading this book. I just thought that it would be boring and wouldn't interest me at all. After reading the first fifty pages though, I proved myself wrong. I find this story fascinating so far. I mean, George Orwell has a wonderful way with words. The descriptions of things like his diary and everything is great. The "Two Minute Hate" was certainly interesting to read about. It confused me so much because I didn't know what it was but now I have some sort of understanding. Unfortunately though, I don't really think that the "Two Minute Hate" is good. I believe that having to spend two minutes being angry, mad, disgusted, and etc is just going to be tiring. Why would anyone want to have a planned meeting where all you do is become angry? The "Thought Police" also seems to be quite different. The way they were spoken of has made me to think more about how much freedom we have in our country though. I think that we are so lucky to have freedom. Freedom of speech especially because we all have the right to believe, think, and say what we want to. On part in the book that is weird would have to be when Winston is when Mrs. Parsons's children call Winston a Thought-criminal and a traitor. That really had to be frightening for Winston considering that he had started to think of himself in that way because of the diary he started to write. So far, all I know is that I am so thankful that our world and lives are not like that today. Afraid to write a diary and to have an opinion; not how I want to live. I imagine that all the questions now building up in my head will be answered while we continue to read this book and hopefully many more questions are to come.

He gives you information without just coming out and saying it. He makes you think and make inferences about the characters and story. I think it is interesting that Winston does not know exactly how old he is or what the date is. Some of it is almost un comprehendable to what we know today. when I first read about the two minutes hate it really had me confused. Now that I think about it really it's really just a time of day to be angry and throw stuff at people you don't like. I think we should bo that in our school too. Life now is so free, and if you would put restrictions like these on people today it would cause mass chaos. In my opinion I do think James Brown is a kind of hunger artist. Instead of starving or paints singing is his medium. I do see similarities between him and the hunger artist in the story we read. I don't think Disney is trying to tell young girls that 'being cool' is wearing make up or they need to depend on a man. I also think Disney may be trying to branch out to boys with fairy tales, and I don't think it's a bad thing at all. I think my twelve year old boy cousin would even enjoy Tangled. I've seen Tangled, and I think it's more about telling its viewers to follow their dreams and be independent than to desperately need someone to do things for you. I think that's a good message with the way the world is today, because today if you want something you have to work for it, no one's going to just hand it to you. The romance between the main characters was minimal, and it showed kids to be honest with people. I really liked Tangled, because it was a new spin on a classic fairy tale. I compared it to a Rapunzel movie I loved when I was little, and because that movie was older it stuck to the original fairy tale to the letter. (I really want to watch it now!) That movie didn't have the best influence on kids, but it was still really good. The main theme of the older Rapunzel was good always conquers evil, which is a good moral but it did play up the romance between the prince and Rapunzel. I thought the movie was cute and had a positive influence on young kids. I personally don't think Disney is finished with fairy tales; they just might be taking a break until they can think of something fresh and new. To me Disney is synonymous with good movies, both fairy tales and other movies. I will always love Disney movies and I'll most likely watch almost any animated movie they come out with, because I don't think it's dumb or childish to enjoy 'little kid' movies it's a way to relive childhood memories for a short time.

James Brown isn’t a hunger artist, but he can relate to one and act like one. When I watched his video, I couldn’t understand what he was saying, so I looked up his lyrics. Basically, all it says is baby, please, please, please don’t go over and over again. I don’t see how this can relate to a hunger artist, other than the fact that the hunger artist doesn’t want to leave or stop fasting. When James Brown performs this song, he makes slow movements and acts very weak. Hunger artists are very weak because of malnutrition and can barely stand up. James Brown would also fall hard to his knees, like it’s painful for him to persist. While he was on his knees, a man would put a cape on his shoulders, help him stand up and start to walk him off the stage. James would walk very slowly, and then suddenly, he would stop. He threw off the cape and finished his performance. This is just like what happens in A Hunger Artist. When the 40 days were up for the hunger artist and it was time for him to leave, they put a cape on him and walked him out of the cage. He put up a fight and was angry that they wanted him to leave, because he wanted to continue fasting. Fasting is an art, just as singing is. The Hunger Artist and James Brown are alike because they love what they do and don’t want to stop, regardless if society wants them to.

For 73 years, Disney has been known for their romantic princess stories. There is always a beautiful princess in some castle or faraway place in need of some kind of help. Of course, prince charming comes and rescues her, takes her with him and they live happily ever after. How many more different version of the same story can we make? I agree and think it’s time to give fairy tales a rest for a while, however, I don’t think they should stop forever. They should wait a generation or two and bring fairy tales back as a fresh new idea.

On the other hand, what will the little girls have to do if Disney puts a hold on fairy tales? Girls love the idea of a pretty princess finding her prince charming and living a wonderful life. They dress up in little dresses and play high heels and imagine themselves in their own fairy tale. Nowadays, they dress up like Hannah Montana and pretend to be a rock star. TV makes it all about the glamour and fashion. I think girls are maturing too fast and want to make themselves older than they are. They want to be “hot” and wear makeup like older girls. I personally don’t think they should wear makeup until they’re at least 12 or 13. Without fairy tales, young girls will watch TV and maybe get the wrong idea of how they should act and dress. iCarly is one example of a show that should be for pre-teens. It is a funny show, but it exhibits dating, kissing, and portrays the image that a “pretty” girl is someone who wears makeup and dresses older than they are.

Tangled is said to be the last fairy tale from Disney. The creators put a spin on this story. The focus is now on the male character. They are doing this because they want the movie to be “gender neutral.” What little boy wants to watch a girly princess movie? If this new twist on fairy tales creates a new interest, I don’t think they should stop making them.

The phrase, “A Hunger Artist” can mean so many things, each meaning something entirely different. For instance, if a young child heard this, they might think of a hungry person painting a picture. It may be just as simple as that, or you can dig deeper and discover more symbolic meanings. Everyone has their own opinions about what hunger is and what they hunger for. They also have different ideas of what an artist is, whether it’s someone who makes their fortune painting or sculpting, or someone who is passionate about what they do.

I look at this phrase in separate parts. The first word is A. This word is used so often in the English language, who knows what we would do without it! A is singular, referring to one object. Could this phrase mean a person, an animal or an inanimate object? Hunger is the second word. This word can have numerous different meanings. It can be a want, a desire, lust, a passion for something, the need or urge for something to change. Could this phrase refer to one of these meanings? Finally, the last word is artist. What is an artist? Is it someone who has an endowment that expresses it through what they do? It could also be a person who expresses their feelings in what they love to do, whether it is frustration or pleasure.

In my thoughts I like to think of “A Hunger Artist” as someone who has an urge for something and expresses it in their own way. They don’t need the approval of anyone else, they just see something they yearn for and go for it. They do things their own way to get what they desire. I think a hunger artist is also someone who wants something to change and puts great passion into trying to change it. Our world is full of wrong, evil and war. Many people have a hunger or desire to change this and have world peace. There are groups of people out in the world who dedicate their lives to achieve this. They have such a passion and thirst for what they feel that they may say it is an art. I would consider people like this hunger artists. They put all they have into trying to attain what they believe in and yearn for with great passion.

The Hunger Artist in our story refuses to quit fasting after only fourty days. this comes back to bite him though because he is eventually forgotten about. Yes there is a limit to how long you can fast and the limit is death.

When James is singing this song, it's kind of confusing the way he sends messages to his audience. Some of them probably don't realize what he's trying to get out there. Like the Hunger Artist in the story, I think he is trying to get attention when he falls to his knees and then everyone rushes over to help him. In the story, the guy is unbelievably in that cage for more than 40 days. What's unbelievable about James is that he acts like he's fine afterwards and sings just like he is okay. Everyone think this is amazing that he could fall so badly a couple times then be able to sing again. They must look up to him because the crowd went wild at the end. When the Hunger Artist is in his cage, people stop and gaze at him wondering how he can go on without food. He has his own reasons for doing this that no one else could understand. Maybe James Brown is just trying to seem like some hero that can do anything and not be hurt no matter how many times he falls down.

I couldn't think of anything James Brown and the Hunger Artist had in common when I first started this post. But when I thought about it more, I began to see more similarities. To me, I believe they're both trying to convey a message. I believe they're trying to say " This is me. This is what I'm interested in, this is what I'm striving for." James Brown is striving to be an amazing musician. His stage presence tells you that. He seems like he wants to be artistically unique by the way he dances around. At first when I tried to relate singer James Brown to our story, I couldn't think of anything that they had in common. So I tried looking at it from a different perspective. What are they both striving towards? Well actually, those answers are pretty simple. Each, in their own unique way, is trying to express themselves in a completely new way unheard of to their society at that time. Let's start with the hunger artist. I'm not completely sure what message he is trying to convey, but starving himself is completely uncommon. This helps him get the attention of others, and the more publicity, the easier it is for him to get his message across to people. James Brown's songs and performances are going towards the same goal. The way he sings and dances is different than anyone else during his generation of music, and it caught the eye of many around the country. As with the hunger artist, this publicity can only help matters when he tries to get people to understand his feelings.

James Brown is a hunger artist in my eyes. When singing his song, "Please, Please, Please", although not quite understandable to me he put all of his emotions into it. He fell to his knees many times probably because of his emotions just over powering him. After falling they put a cape like coat on him and try to usher him away to get him to stop singing. Everytime though, he came right back to the microphone and started singing again like nothing had just happened. Then falling would again repeat itself and again and again he would go back to singing. His desire to sing this song had so much power over him he just couldn't and wouldn't stop. To me, James Brown is mostly an inspiration. To be willing to fall over and over just to finish one song is what makes him a hunger artist. Along with the James Brown, he is like the hunger artist we have read about. This hunger artist doesn't wish to stop fasting, he actually wants to continue. He believes so much in what he is doing that he really doesn't care what everyone else may be saying about him. He "hungered" to taste food that would have tasted good to him and instead found himself "hungry" to keep fasting. Dedication and desire is what makes both of these people true hunger artists. They knew what they wanted in life and knew how to express themselves to the world in a completely unique way that sometimes astonishes us. But isn't that what being a hunger artist is all about?

When a movie writer decides to put a movie into production, what does he focus on? The group watching the movie, how many people it is going to attract, and of course the money. The goal in the end is to make the most money and attract the most attention for the most amount of time, but when you look to disney movies and cartoon shows, those are made to attract the young ones. The fact that they are getting rid of these fairy tails all together I think is just plain stupid. The reason for this I am sure is again, the money. When they make a movie they want it to influence their audience into believing what they are watching can be reality. What about that song "whip my hair?" What is that inviting young ones to do? Whip thier hair, have fun, no matter what age you are. They are teaching them to be adult before thier time. That is why they quit with the fairy tales. The kids of this generation are so influenced by socitety around them. They want to be more mature than they are and that is causing them to think too much of what others think of them. Now 5 or 6 year olds think they are too cool to go see a movie like that. Who cares what everyone thinks! Who cares if you are adult enough for everyone around them! They need to be themselves and that is what matters most. I went to see Tangled and it was such a great movie and I would highly recommend it. Just because it's cartoon doesn't make it lame. Do you what you feel comfortable doing.

I thought this was a very, interesting video. The real question at hand though isn't the quality of the video, but the relationship to the type of artist we read about. I think James Brown was using weakness and frailty as a way to get the audience's attention. I mean face it, when we see someone in public fall or collapse, we don't just ignore it and walk past. It catches our eye. It makes up laugh or we may feel pity for the person who is involved. I think that in this video he collapses and then when he is helped up, he perserveres so he can continue his preformance. This way the audience feels pity and concern for him and then when he starts to sing again, it is almost like a miracle and that gets them even more excited. This is kinda what they hunger artist does. He starves himself and when he comes out of the cage and is ready to give in to eating food, he decides that he doesn't want to eat, he wants to continue his "act." Both the video and the story use the weakness and fragility to dig deep into their audience's emotions and get them to hope in their success. That is all there is to it.

Disney's new movie "Tangled" is said to have been the last fairytale/princess movie to be made by disney. Many may question why this is and personally, I also question why. I understand that society today has changed a lot, but also I know that there are little girls around that still love fairytales and happy endings. Note taken though that many kids are into action films like Transformers and Iron Man, and may perfer to see one of those instead of a fairytale. Yet, I still believe many kids still enjoy fairytales and by disney putting these to a halt might in fact stop thoughts that happy endings exist. Now, some may say that disney has decided to stop fairytales because kids want to be "hot and cool" like many disney channel and nickelodeon stars now portray. That is something that I actually find disturbing and just flat out wrong. I know by being an aunt of 4 little girls that they still and will for a while love fairytales. My neices aren't interested in being "hot and cool", they are more interested in who they are going to play with next. Unfortunately though I seem to agree with disney that some of their audiences seem a bit more mature and this is only to be blamed upon parents who let their children watch more mature shows and movies. These are the parents that I frown upon because shows like "House" and "30 Rock" should not be watched by a 2 or 3 year old. With this in mind though, there really is nothing we can do about disney quitting the fairytales. All we can do now is just wait for the end and hope that some people might actually be watching out for their children.

Recently Disney has made the astonishing announcement that, for the time being, they are done making fairy tales. This came as a shock to me, because Disney is famous for it fairy tales. The reasoning behind this odd business venture is even more startling that the stopping itself. It has been proven that small children now days are more interested in being "Cool" and keeping up a self image of popularity. This is one persons fault, the parents. I have even noticed that my mom likes to watch CSI and other more mature shows, and she does not always wait for my little three year old brother to go to bed. Sure enough i see him mimicking stuff from CSI all the time. Children learn from the actions of others. When they are young they cannot comprehend that the people in the TV aren't really real.Anyways Tangled is a spin on the classic fairy tale Rapunzel. It has been updated in ways that will appeal to kids today, and is supposedly a very good movie. I still think Disney is making a bad decision not making fairy tales, in fact i'm pretty sure Walt Disney is rolling around in his grave.

Walt disney is done making fairytale and princess moves. Why? It's because of the way kids are growing up now, compared to the way they were years ago. Before, little kids wanted to grow up to be the beautiful princess, or the handsome knight in shining armour. But now adays, kids watch more mature movies and T.V. shows. They no longer want to be princesses or princes. What they want is to be "hot". They dream and imagine of being popular, hot/gorgous, and having lots, and lots of money. Because of this, Walt Disney is almost forced to stop making fairytale movies, and move onto another subject. The question is, what are the "family" movies that Disney is most famous for, going to be about? Disney will have to adapt to society.

In our world today, little kids are becoming more interested in what is the cool thing to be doing, not spending time watching a new Disney movie that has came out. They just want to buy all the new electronics that are out so they can be 'cool'. I think that is the main reason they are going to end Disney movies. There are many other possibilities, such as kids just aren't enjoying these kinds of movies anymore and are being encouraged to watch better movies by parents or friends. Little girls aren't worried about being princesses anymore, they just want to be known as hot. In example, I'm sure the last thing on nine year old Willow Smith's mind is watching fairytale movies and whatnot. She just loves getting attention from the whole world, and maybe that's what other kids are aiming for. People need to be setting better examples for the children all around.

I think the reason that Disney has kind of stopped producing fairy tales is because they are out of ideas. The original movies are what they basically built their company on and what we all know and love and now there are no more opportunities. They probably think that it is best just to leave fairy tales behind and create more films for a variety of ages, such as Hannah Montana and others. The quote, "They're interested in being hot, in being cool. Clearly, they see this as what society values." seems absurd, but really it's what the newer movies and shows endorce.

It is said that Disney is finished with making fairytales. This might be for different reasons. We really dont have a say in why this is happening. What we read on line might be true, and might not be true. I think this is happening because people dont want to watch these kind of movies anymore. Kids grow up to fast, and there not interested in movies like Tangled. I also think that those who did watch fairytales as a child will continue to watch those same movies as they get older. It is sad that Disney is finished making fairtales. The kids in the future wont get the same experience as we did when we were kids.

As we started to discuss this in class last week, I found it a very interesting topic. I do believe children these days have changed in so many different ways. Almost everything these days is electronic, but that doesn't mean we still can't go outside and enjoy nature. We should all, children or not, spend time outside. I don't think everything being based off technology is necessarily a bad thing, but I do think that there is a point at which it should stop. I don't think people should be on the internet or playing video games all day,but an hour or two a day isn't a problem. They should still get exercise and spend time with their families. As for young five year olds wanting to be "hot" and "cool", I do not think it is a huge deal at the moment. However, if the way the children's shows are now continue, I feel it will become a bigger issue in the future. So many of our "children shows" on disney these days are becoming inappropriate for young kids. Many girls are wearing very revealing clothing and using some words that aren't the best for kids to use. These shows are fine for people our age to watch, but I think that five year olds should not be learning this stuff yet. These kind of things are leading five year olds to want to be "hot" or "cool". At this age I think they should be wanting to be a princess instead. As for disney not making anymore fairytales.. I don't think it is a problem either way. There are plenty of people and children who love fairytales, but plenty of people don't care for them. I think they should try going down this road and see where it leads. Maybe it'll be a bad idea, but maybe it won't. They can always go back to making fairytales if it doesn't work out. Many people don't like the idea of change at first, but after a while they grow quite fond of it or at least become okay with it. In my opinion I think this is going to be the result of disney not making fairytales. If people want to watch fairytales, they can always go back to the classic disney movies and watch those. There are plenty to choose from. This topic is very interesting to me, I'm glad we got to blog on this.

Times are changing, and technology is quickly taking over the world. Kids always want the newest and best things even if they don't understand how it works. with all of this new motion sensing video games for exercise and sports kids don't even have to go outside to get exercise. That doesn't mean we need to go back and start playing with sticks and dirt like the old days, but the outdoors needs to be enjoyed. Younger people are more worried about being cool than doing what they enjoy. I think that is why Tangled will be the last fairytale movie made by Disney. i am from the age of technology, but that video of Willow Smith gives me a sick feeling in my stomach. If I were the parent I would not want a video on youtube of my eight year old child dancing like that. Even in a small town like Knox we can see the change i can't imagine what it is like in a larger city.

In my opinion a hunger artist is a person that’s desirous for inspiration. They are an artist that’s never satisfied by their own work. Other people may believe they are talented, but they constantly feel their work isn’t finished or good enough. They’re unsatisfied and miserable, because they aren’t creating what they envision. Expressing their thoughts and ideas in art is torture to them, instead of a release of emotions. Instead of them enjoying their art they’re burdened by it and are conflicted with inner turmoil. A quote I once heard perfectly describes a hunger artist, “An artist is a creature driven by demons. He doesn’t know why they choose him and he’s usually too busy to wonder why.”

It does concern me that people think little girls are too cool and want to be hot at a young age. But somehow I think that's a bit to drastic. I don't know any 5 or 6 year olds that want to be hot and cool. Do they even know what being hot or cool even is at that age? It is possible that little girls do think like that but I can't help to think that's the parent's fault for not encouraging better morals. However, I don't think it's that big of a deal that Disney has decided to take a break on movies about princesses and other fairy tales. I still believe that no matter how much movies improve this day in age, little kids (and adults) will still always love the classic stories and unique characters from movies like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderalla, or Snow White. I do think that Disney is trying to recreate movies that can top the classic ones but truth is it doesn't matter what Disney produces as long as they uphold the traditional values in modern society they will continue to delight audiences of all ages. Even classic fairy tales with princesses are watched and enjoyed by all age groups and genders. I would like to think back on other Disney movies I have seen that are not princess related or targeted only to young girls... Toy Story, Lion King, Finding Nemo, UP, Peter Pan, Wall E, Narnia, Monsters Inc., Remember the Titans, Tarzan, and Jungle Book. This is a very interesting article. I did enjoy writing about Disney because their movies have always been a part of most childhood lives especially mine.

Among girls, princesses and the romanticized ideal they represent — revolving around finding the man of your dreams — have a limited shelf life. With the advent of "tween" TV, the tiara-wearing ideal of femininity has been supplanted by new adolescent role models such as the Disney Channel's Selena Gomez and Nickelodeon's Miranda Cosgrove.

"By the time they're 5 or 6, they're not interested in being princesses," said Dafna Lemish, chairwoman of the radio and TV department at Southern Illinois University and an expert in the role of media in children's lives. "They're interested in being hot, in being cool. Clearly, they see this is what society values."

The part about girls 5 and 6 years old who are interested in “being hot, in being cool” really makes me wonder. Is this what we want for our little girls? I don’t know.

Absolutely, I agree that a life “revolving around finding the man of your dreams” isn’t really the right message either, but what, then, is the goal of “being hot” and “cool” leading toward? I guess I’ll do a little research on the new tween role models and see.

The new Disney movie Tangled, which is about Rapunzel trying to make her way in the world outside of her tower, is said to be the last Disney fairytale movie. I think part of the reason it's the last is the advancement in technology. In an age of great graphics and 3D movies, it would be hard to make "classic" fairytale movies. I also think people are moving away from fairy tales. I think younger kids today are maturing faster and watching less fairy tales. My last reason is that they are running out of fairytale ideas. When you make fifty movies, it's going to get hard to come up with good ideas. I think that Disney will continue to make movies, but move away from the fairytale genre.

The new Disney movie Tangled is said to be the last fairytale Disney produces. It was said that the company wanted to keep up with the current time, and right now the time isn't too keen on unstoppable princes saving the desperate, pretty princesses. Animations head at Pixar, Ed Catmull, and animations head at Disney, John Lasseter, believe "films and genres run a course, but they sometimes some back because people have a fresh take on them.. but we do not have any other musicals or fairy tales lined up." That doesn't mean they're calling a quits on fairy tales all together, they're just going to take a break on them right now and focus on genres that are more popular these days.

Disney's movie "Tangled" is the next upcoming fairyt tale that is being produced by them. As for now, it is also going to be their last. Tangled is pretty much the retelling of Repunzel. Disney has been making "princess" films since 1937 with the creation of Snow White. Their plan is to continue on with Toy Story's characters, Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Pixar Animation Studios chief Ed Catmull says, "Films and genres do run a course. They may come back later because someone has a fresh take on it …" I feel that Disney has made the right decision to stop with the fairy tales, at least for now. Each one has the same meaning and point to it, no matter how the story unfolds. Most times they end up having the good guy/girl achieving there goal with around 10 minutes left in the movie, and of course they all live "happily ever after". These sorts of movies no longer appeal to any more than the groups of little girls that have no idea what is going on. The biggest difference is the way our society and culture has changed. Nobody, not even the little kids, believe that someone's life can turn out to be absolutely perfect. People in this day and age our sick of the same old "perfect" story coming out every couple of years, when our lives constantly change as we live then. I think it's time for our movie preferences to change as well.

A hunger artist...these are three random words thrown together, what do they mean? I think that someone who is "a hunger artist" is a person striving for more, someone who does something that is inspiring to one person, maybe themselves, but its someone. But that they strive to be better, they want to do more, learn more, create and show people the beauy that is there art. Your "art" might be singing or dance, sports or poetry, painting or theatre. Your art is what you do best, that one special thing that makes you you. It creates who you are and who you choose to be. This is the spirit that you have for something, the desire that you have to create, to feel the way you do when you find your art and you make it into more. An artist is a person who takes somthing usual and puts passion behind it. Someone who is hungary for something is searching, reaching, desireing more than what they can currently acheive. So tome a hunger artist is someone who is striving to create.

When I look at the phrase "Hunger Artist" and also am asked to define it I run into a problem. The problem is that any form or art is different depending on the person. Art means different things to different people. The general understanding of a hunger artist is that they starve themselves to elicit a reaction for a cause that they support, but couldn't other things also be considered "Hunger Art". For example, someone who paints a picture depicting starvation in the depression of the 1930's, this would meet the criteria of the phrase as it is art dealing with hunger. We must also look at an artist as someone who not only paints, but also as anything. Is someone who sculpts food, and even bowls from clay a "Hunger Artist"? Is someone who preforms in a Broadway show about starvation and poverty also not by definition a "Hunger artist"? There are hundreds of possible variations of the word artist alone (a painter, musician, vocalist, actor, ect...), and when you add in the several meanings of hunger you get an almost endless stream of things that by definition could be a "Hunger Artist" .

When I defined the words we discussed in class, there were several meanings for each. The word 'Hunger' could mean 1: A compelling need or desire for food. 2: To have a strong desire. Those are two completely different meanings for just one word. The word 'Artist' means 1: A person who practices one of the fine arts, especially a painter or sculptor. 2: A person who works in one of the performing arts, such as an actor, musician, or singer. There could be many definitions for this word in many different opinions. But the phrase, 'A Hunger Artist' to me means someone who hungers to do as they please without being judged. Someone who can let themselves go free and feel like nothing else in the world matters. Someone who can let their emotions run wild and be the person they set out to be. A Hungar Artist

I think we talked about alot of important features of the word Hungar and the word artist today in class. I think that a Hunger Artist could be anything from someone that works on fighting hunger in places to someone who uses hunger to make art like paintings and such. In a symbolic way I think that it means someone uses art to express what they hunger for in life. Many people use art to express themselves, or to show how they think, or feel. A hunger artist may use art to show people what is really desired in life.

First I'm going to define a hunger artist based on my thoughts alone. A hunger doesn't have to mean food, it could mean a strong want for something. An artist could mean many things, but I think to sum it up it means someone who does what they have a passion for. To me, hunger artist means someone that does or creates something about what they really want.
Now I'm going to use the definition of each word. The definition of hunger is to feel the need for food, or have a strong desire for something. The definition for artist is someone whose job requires knowledge of art, or someone who practices one of the fine arts. Together it means a strong desire to practice one of the fine arts.
I think either of these definitions could be correct because there are so many meanings of the words separately. Together there could be even more definitions.
